UNESCO MIL Alliance’s newly elected Global Board

The results of the election of the first UNESCO MIL Alliance Global Board have now been finalised, following an open call for candidates and a voting period that closed on 20 December 2025.

The MIL Alliance Global Board will serve as the main decision-making and coordination body of the MIL Alliance, shaping its global strategy and ensuring that members’ voices inform UNESCO’s media and information literacy (MIL) agenda. Among its responsibilities, the Board will set priorities, oversee annual reporting and lead joint initiatives that advance MIL policy, research and practice worldwide.

Elected members will play a vital role in representing their regions or areas of expertise, fostering collaboration across the global network, and driving meaningful progress.

The elected members of the MIL Alliance Global Board are organised by category of representation:

  • Geographical representatives
  • Academic and research representatives
  • Specialist representatives

Geographical representatives will play a central role in ensuring balanced, inclusive and context-sensitive governance of the MIL Alliance. Representing the five main UNESCO geographic regions, they will be responsible for communicating regional priorities, challenges and perspectives in the Global Board’s strategic discussions.

The geographical representatives are as follows:

Asia and the Pacific: Mradula Singh, Misthy Sablok
Africa: Badal Fohmoh, Blaise Pascal Andzongo
Arab States: Hania Bitar, Mohamed El-Hawwary
Europe and North America: Irene Andriopoulou, Lexie Kirkconnell-Kawana
Latin America and the Caribbean: Silvia Bacher, Monica Palomino

The academic and research representatives will provide the intellectual and evidence-based foundation of the MIL Alliance’s work and will ensure that strategies, policies and activities are informed by rigorous research, critical analysis and academic collaboration. The three positions for academic and research representatives have been filled by Sherri Hope Culver, Fernanda Bonacho and José Manuel Pérez Tornero.

The five specialist representatives will provide technical and thematic expertise and ensure that emerging issues, specialised domains and evolving challenges in media and information literacy are adequately addressed, as well as providing practical recommendations. The elected specialist representatives are Alexandre Sayad, Dun Concha Abiera, Yonti Friesem, Carolyn Wilson and Chloé Pété.
