Let’s Talk about Media Literacy on International Literacy Day

Literacy is more than reading and writing. Literacy also helps us to understand and act on the information we see or hear in the media or online.

To raise awareness of this the Adult Literacy for Life (ALL) Programme Office in SOLAS has chosen International Literacy Day (8 September) to launch the ‘Let’s talk about media literacy’ campaign.

Media Literacy Ireland is proud to join a range of local and national level partners, including the Government of Ireland, Regional Literacy Coordinators (RLCs) at Ireland’s 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs), NALA and Ireland’s library network to support this campaign.

The media campaign will run across national and regional radio, social media, digital platforms and on outdoor advertising platforms in retail centres across Ireland and is designed to raise awareness of the importance of media literacy in Ireland.

The campaign messaging reminds us to Stop, Think and Check the information that we read, hear and see.

The call to action is to go to adultliteracyforlife.ie/medialiteracy where people can test their media literacy knowledge by taking part in a short media literacy WhatsApp quiz.

The campaign webpage also signposts to other sources of media literacy support, as well as highlighting the wide range of events taking place across the country. Everything from workshops, talks, classes and digital drop-in clinics. All kinds of topics are covered, including AI, navigating the online world, how to use a smartphone, online security, tackling disinformation and creating websites.

The campaign is in two parts. Part 1 of the media literacy campaign will start on Monday, 8 September and run until Monday, 22 September. Part 2 of the campaign will run during Global Media and Information Literacy Week from Friday, 24 October to Friday, 31 October.

If you want to help amplify the campaign messages, please tag SOLAS and use #MediaLiteracyMatters or #AdultLiteracyForLife on social media.

The ALL Programme Office have also produced a great partner pack to help organisations amplify the campaign messages. It includes social media templates and downloadable images and videos, in Irish and English, that can be used across your channels.
