‘Let’s Talk about Media Literacy’ on International Literacy Day

The Adult Literacy for Life (ALL) Programme Office in SOLAS will mark International Literacy Day 2025 by launching a national campaign called ‘Let’s talk about media literacy’.

The first phase of the campaign will run for three weeks, starting on 1 September in the run-up to International Literacy Day on 8 September 2025, while a second phase of the campaign will take place during Global Media and Information Literacy Week (24–31 October).

As part of efforts to drive awareness and understanding about media literacy across Ireland, the ALL Programme Office is encouraging literacy and media literacy stakeholders nationwide to get involved, spread the word about the campaign and to share information about local literacy events and learning opportunities, with a focus on literacy, media literacy, digital literacy and International Literacy Day.

In line with this year’s theme of International Literacy Day, which is ‘promoting literacy in the digital age’, the campaign will focus on raising awareness of media literacy. It will encourage adults in Ireland to understand and act on information, and access services and use technology, so they know how to confidently make informed choices about the information they trust.

Aimed at people with unmet literacy needs, as well as their friends and families, the campaign will encourage people to ‘stop, think and check’ that the information they see and hear is accurate and reliable. It will feature a ‘call to action’, directing people to a dedicated landing page on the Adult Literacy for Life (ALL) website where they will find a media literacy quiz to improve their understanding of what media literacy is, with key information and resources listed on media literacy.

The campaign will run across a wide selection of media platforms including national and regional radio, social media and digital platforms, and out-of-home (outdoor advertising) platforms.

Led by the ALL Programme Office, a range of key partners and stakeholders to develop the campaign, including Media Literacy Ireland, NALA, and local ETB Regional Literacy Coordinator partners.

Key messaging

Key messaging will promote the ‘stop, think, check’ approach, developed by Media Literacy Ireland.

STOP – take a moment to consider online media content before commenting or sharing.

THINK – ask yourself where the information came from and why you are seeing it. How does it make you feel and why?

CHECK – check other reliable sources to see if the same information is available.

A campaign partner pack, which will include information on the campaign – its aims, key messaging and creative campaign assets – will be shared with partners ahead of the campaign launch.

What you can do

The Adult Literacy for Life (ALL) Programme Office in SOLAS is asking organisations who have an interest in this area to start thinking now about how they could get involved. Examples of how to support the campaign include:

  • Running national or local events relating to media literacy on or around International Literacy Day on 8 September or on Global Media and Information Literacy Week, 24–31 October 2025.
  • Organise talks, workshops or panel discussions that focus on the topic of media literacy to raise awareness about it.
  • Invite guest speakers to share information about media literacy topics such as spotting misinformation, using the internet safely, climate or health information, active citizenship, or artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Use or share free resources like those available on Media Literacy Ireland or at NALA.
  • Partner with local community organisations to run events. If you are interested in running a local event it may be helpful to speak to your local ETB Regional Literacy Coordinator for advice and assistance if required.
  • Encourage people to take a short WhatsApp-based quiz about media literacy, which will be available on the Adult Literacy for Life webpage in September. This will go live when the campaign launches.
  • Share the campaign messages and creative assets (graphics, video formats, etc.) widely with your network.
  • Include information about the campaign in your newsletters, bulletins and on your website.

Promote what you are planning

The Adult Literacy for Life Programme Office would like to hear about any activities you have planned. You can email allinnovation@solas.ie to let us know of any activities or for more information on the campaign.
