Coimisiún na Meán awards media literacy funding

Coimisiún na Meán has announced three projects that will receive funding under its Media Literacy / Countering Disinformation Call for Submissions for Funding 2026. The call was launched on 10 March to support the implementation of the National Counter Disinformation Strategy to fund projects in media literacy research, training and awareness that could help people better understand and respond to online disinformation in Ireland.

The call attracted strong interest among different sectors across Ireland. Initiatives were evaluated on their capacity to deliver on one or more of three objectives:

  • strengthening evidence-based media literacy;
  • supporting the national library strategy ‘The library is the place’;
  • working with partners to develop content that helps people in Ireland make informed decisions about media.

Following a competitive qualitative assessment process, the assessment panel recommended funding for three projects that demonstrated strong alignment with the objectives of the call:

  • ‘Mainstreaming Media Literacy: A Response to Disinformation’ by the DCU Institute of Future Media (FuJo) / EDMO Ireland, which will examine how media literacy is currently being delivered across key sectors, review existing research, and identify needs to help shape more effective national approaches.
  • ‘Media Literacy / Countering Disinformation’ by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), which will develop and test an online tool to measure how effective media literacy initiatives are and to track resilience to online disinformation in Ireland.
  • ‘Skills for Life Information Integrity Project’ by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA), which will build media literacy supports into Ireland’s public library network, reaching communities across all 30 library authorities and 330 branches.

Over €268,000 will be distributed among the recommended organisations. This call is the first of two funding streams planned for 2026. Keep an eye on Coimisiún na Meán’s website www.cnam.ie and the MLI news section for updates.
