Balancing screen time and hands-on family fun

by Ryan Meade, Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager, Google Ireland

Summer holidays bring sunshine, outdoor adventures, and a familiar seasonal challenge for parents and carers: managing digital screen time. Rather than treating device usage purely as a distraction, modern media literacy recommendations offer a fresh perspective – using digital tools as a launchpad for curiosity, hands-on learning, and real-world play.

Google and YouTube have highlighted three practical approaches to help families establish healthy digital habits while keeping children active and engaged all summer long.

1. Establish healthy guardrails with simple parental controls

Setting reasonable boundaries is the foundation of positive digital well-being. Built-in parental controls allow families to create structured schedules without constant friction over turning devices off.

  • Android On-Device Parental Controls: Protected by a simple PIN and located within Android settings, parents can set daily usage limits, manage app access, and schedule evening downtime to lock devices at bedtime.
  • Google Family Link: For more capabilities, Family Link enables features like ‘School Time’ mode and location alerts.
  • YouTube Protections for Kids & Teens: YouTube provides tools such as Shorts feed time limits, ‘Take a Break’ prompts, and bedtime reminders. Younger children (under 13) can explore through YouTube Kids, while older children can use Supervised accounts tailored with age-appropriate experiences.

Having a transparent conversation – or even co-creating a ‘family media agreement’ – ensures children understand why limits exist and builds digital self-regulation skills.

2. Fuel curiosity with guided exploration

Learning doesn’t stop when school breaks for summer. Interactive technology with parental guidance can channel children’s innate curiosity into meaningful problem-solving experiences.

  • AI Quests: This game-based learning platform invites children to step into the role of researchers, using applied AI literacy to solve global challenges such as brain mapping and flood prediction.
  • Guided Learning in Gemini: Whether exploring how rollercoasters work or learning a new language whilst on holiday, Guided Learning in Gemini offers step-by-step support for topics like math, science and more, building core problem-solving skills together.
  • Educational Creators: Engaging educational channels across YouTube bring subjects like natural history, science, and art to life.
3. Turn screen time into offline adventures

A key goal of positive screen time is bringing inspiration into the physical world. A short video clip or quick query can spark hours of offline creativity:

  • DIY and Hands-On Projects: Spend a few minutes on YouTube Kids watching a step-by-step tutorial on building paper airplanes or indoor forts, then put the screens away and host a contest.
  • Camp YouTube: Weekly curated playlists encourage children to explore nature, discover new artistic hobbies, and stay physically active.
  • AI-Powered Brainstorming: Use Gemini as your personal summer brainstorm partner, like generating custom backyard scavenger hunts, identifying local plant species on family hikes, or following a child-friendly slime recipe using basic kitchen ingredients.

By treating technology as a tool for discovery rather than passive consumption, families can use screen time as a launchpad for creativity, exploration and family time this summer.
