Call for experts in news media & cross-border journalism

The European Commission is looking for all kinds of experts, from academics to practitioners, from experts in the news media business to journalists, and from all corners of Europe.

In 2021, a panel of experts on news media will evaluate applications for a call for proposals on Journalism Partnerships, foreseen in June 2021. The panel will be created during summer and the evaluation will take place during several days in Sept/Oct.

How to become an expert?

Interested experts should show their interest by registering in the general EU expert database: https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/work-as-an-expert. Registration remains open, but to be eligible for the first panel on Journalism Partnerships, experts need to register by 30 June.

Please note that this is not an application process but a simple expression of interest. The exact timing and exact remuneration will be decided later. There is no strict definition of what constitutes an expert, anyone interested can apply; CVs will be compared later.

What will the process be?

EACEA will search relevant experts in the database in July, searching for keywords such as ‘journalism’ and ‘news media’. They will only contact pre-selected experts and check their availability, their experience, as well as the diversity and independence of the panel as a whole. Please note that evaluators cannot under any circumstances have a conflict of interest with any of the organisations submitting a project proposal. EACEA will double check this before confirming the panel, and experts will have to sign a declaration on confidentiality and absence of a conflict of interest before they can read the proposals.

As of 2022, two panels will be created every year: one for Journalism Partnerships and one for Media Literacy. Calls for proposals are expected to be published by the end of each year. Next evaluation panels for both calls are expected in spring/summer 2022.
