It presents some reflections on how the obligations of the video-sharing platforms with regard to media literacy could best be understood and applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some key takeaways of the report:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. The benefits of a systematic and transparent approach to MIL for VSPs:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>VSPs\u2019 approach to MIL could be more consistent in terms of targeted demographic and geographic reach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A structured and transparent basis to reporting as well as more clarity about the intended outcomes would be helpful to better understand and assess VSPs&#8217; initiatives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These principles could form the basis of a more coordinated policy approach by VSPs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. The need for multi-stakeholders networks:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>VSPs&#8217; &#8220;measures and tools&#8221; should be understood broadly and not be limited to service-level tools. In this regard, partnerships with on-the-ground bodies or organisations could help complement and reinforce the educational measures in place &#8211; both off-line and online &#8211; in a relevant way<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Networks and alliances are key to promote best practices, foster strong working relationships and develop common approaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. The role of the regulatory authorities:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under a European media literacy strategy framework, regulatory authorities could encourage the cooperation between stakeholders. This could be achieved through, for instance, an \u201cagreement on core competencies and skills indicators\u201d list, a \u201cshared repository of tools and resources\u201d or common principles to assess VSPs&#8217; media literacy activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pexels-report-4467857-1024x534.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pexels-report-4467857-1024x534.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pexels-report-4467857-420x219.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pexels-report-4467857-768x400.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pexels-report-4467857.jpg 1278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EPRA and Media and Information Literacy: a timeline<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since 2008, media literacy features regularly on the agenda of the meetings of the European Platform of audiovisual regulatory authorities (EPRA). Several comparative papers have revealed a growing interest of broadcasting regulators to promote media literacy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the last two years, EPRA has been the home of a developing taskforce of media literacy regulators. From a small group who first met in Luxembourg in 2018, to a permanent working group in 2019, the network has helped to develop strong links between regulators who are active in this field &#8211; to share experience, learn from each other, support new initiatives and foster long-lasting links.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2019, EPRA launched an online discussion forum on Media Literacy for NRAs and have, to date, published several pieces of guidance on topics such as launching&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epra.org\/attachments\/media-literacy-networks-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>networks<\/strong><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epra.org\/attachments\/mil-taskforce-top-tips-for-evaluating-media-literacy-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>evaluation<\/strong><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epra.org\/attachments\/mil-taskforce-researching-media-literacy-a-guidance-document-for-epra-members\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>research<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epra.org\/attachments\/mil-taskforce-top-tips-for-planning-a-media-literacy-campaign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>campaigns<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2020, a series of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epra.org\/news_items\/media-literacy-networks-watch-the-epra-roundtables\"><strong>roundtables on MIL networks<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;took place, alongside discussions in working group format around media literacy and VSPs, leading to this new \u201cReflections\u201d document.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"145\" height=\"103\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/MLI-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-768\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Emmanuelle Machet, Head of\u00a0EPRA Secretariat In line with EPRA\u2019s commitment to reflect and promote the growing importance of Media Literacy in Europe, the EPRA Media and Information Literacy Taskforce, set up in 2018, has recently released a report entitled \u201cReflections on Video Sharing Platforms\u2019 promotion of Media Literacy under the Audiovisual Media Services Directive\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":686,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[23,24],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-884","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-opinion"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
