Two of Ireland\u2019s young creatives have brought home gold from Cannes and there are opportunities for 18\u201330-year-olds to participate in DCU FuJo\u2019s Media Literacy Incubator, the Voices Festival and UNESCO\u2019s Youth Hackathon. June also saw the publication of important reports on trust in news in Ireland and young people\u2019s views on the challenges posed by AI. As part of the project, DCU FuJo is seeking young adults (18\u201330 years) to join a Media Literacy Incubator on <strong>30 July<\/strong>\u00a0at the DCU St Pat\u2019s Campus. Participation is free of charge. Those interested can use this <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSf9MXFn0-dCRUdb42jv06er8o9OQsF8nYmku3b9ghcijG63ZQ\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online form<\/a> to apply<em>.\u00a0<\/em><br><a href=\"https:\/\/fujomedia.eu\/site\/assets\/files\/2338\/changingtide_-_call_for_applications.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>Irish creatives win gold in Cannes<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations to TBWA\\Ireland\u2019s Hannah Murphy and Kate Dempsey who were awarded gold in the prestigious under-30s Young Lions Competition in Cannes. Media Literacy Ireland was delighted to be the official client partner for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/cannes-calling-irelands-young-lions-winners-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2026 Irish Young Lions Competition<\/a>, which took place in February and was run by Iapi, the business representative organisation for Ireland\u2019s creative and communications sector. The 14 winners competed with international teams at Cannes, where Hannah and Kate won gold with their print campaign titled <em>A Guide to the Signs<\/em>, focusing on this year\u2019s brief of water safety.\u00a0 <br><a href=\"https:\/\/iapi.ie\/blog\/default\/gold-award-for-young-lions-at-cannes-lions-festival-2026-endorses-irelands-creative-excellence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>Get ready for the 2026 MLI Awards<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s Media Literacy Ireland Awards are due to open shortly, so now is a good time to start thinking about your entry. With six categories, the aim of the awards is to recognise the great projects, activities and initiatives that are helping to empower citizens, especially within communities, with the media literacy skills to make the best use of media. The 2026 MLI Awards will open for entries on <strong>7 July.<\/strong><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>New online intimate image abuse campaign launched<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new awareness campaign about intimate image abuse has been launched by Ireland&#8217;s online safety charity CyberSafeKids and Irish Internet Hotline. Supported by the Community Foundation Ireland, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cybersafekids.ie\/not-the-end\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>It\u2019s Not The End of the World\u00a0<\/em><\/a>campaign is aimed at empowering children and young people (13\u201317 years) to understand what intimate image abuse is and how to access support.\u00a0\u00a0<br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/cybersafekids-and-irish-internet-hotline-launch-online-intimate-image-abuse-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More<\/a><\/strong> <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>National Financial Literacy Strategy Stakeholder Forum<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first National Financial Literacy Strategy Stakeholder Forum took place on 10 June 2026. It was opened by the T\u00e1naiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris and brought together 65 organisations to develop approaches to improving financial literacy across Ireland. A key strategy objective is to improve fraud and scams awareness among consumers, which includes equipping consumers with the skills and confidence they need to think critically before they click online, identify risks when navigating digital marketplaces and manage their money safely. <br><a href=\"https:\/\/financialliteracy.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>Global Launch of the Family Guide for the Digital Age<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This month saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/articles\/growing-connected-world-launch-global-resource-families-media-information-literacy?hub=750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launch<\/a> of the flagship <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemi.fr\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-06\/EN%20-%20Family%20Guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Growing up in a Connected World: A Family Guide for the Digital Age<\/a>.<\/em> Designed to support families navigating today\u2019s rapidly evolving digital information ecosystem, this flagship global resource from UNESCO\u2013CLEMI was shaped by lived family experiences and informed by over 35 experts from around the globe. In response to this urgent challenge, the new EU-funded project\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.media-diversity.org\/projects\/mindishield-combating-online-minority-related-disinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>MinDiShield \u2013 Combating Online Minority-Related Disinformation<\/em><\/a>\u00a0has been launched to strengthen resilience, promote media literacy and support communities in navigating the digital information landscape safely and confidently.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/subject\/lifelong-learning\/mindishield-supports-minority-communities-against-online-disinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>News Literacy Unplugged: Offline activities boost critical thinking in an online world<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The News Literacy Project in the US is seeking to take news literacy instruction offline this summer with its \u2018unplugged\u2019 printables\u00a0\u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/newslit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/News-Literacy-Bookmark-set.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bookmark set<\/a> and two foldable booklets, the <a href=\"https:\/\/newslit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Teen-Safety-Zine.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teen Safety zine<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/newslit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Information-Ecosystem-Zine.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Information Ecosystem zine<\/a>. The deadline for submissions is <strong>23 August<\/strong>.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/voicesfestival.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/VoicesAwards-Call-for-entries.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Call for participants: Exposing the Invisible\u00a0Investigation Residency 2026<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hosted by Tactical Tech in Berlin, the three-day <em>Exposing the Invisible Investigation Residency<\/em> invites experienced EU-based journalists, fact-checkers, researchers and investigators to gather together to enhance their skills, generate new ideas and develop collaborations. Taking place from 30 September to 2 October, the 2026 gathering will focus on three major topics affecting societies today:\u00a0AI and Us, Growing Up with Tech, and Mapping the Depths of the Ocean. The deadline for applications is<strong> 5 July<\/strong>.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/exposingtheinvisible.org\/en\/news\/call-investigation-residency-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Call for Papers: International Child and Family Conference<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0Second International Child and Family Conference, organised by the University of Bristol, will take place next year,\u00a0from 14 June to 16 June 2027. The conference will seek to explore how the complexities of the world shape the lives of children and their families globally, nationally and locally; inform the various strategies these groups use to navigate current challenges; and influence research and policy responses. The conference welcomes the submission of papers, panels, workshops, roundtables, and posters from a range of disciplines. The 2026 report shows that Irish people continue to trust major news brands but are losing trust in news more generally. Research for this annual report is undertaken by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford while analysis of the Irish data is provided by the DCU Institute for Future Media, Democracy and Society (FuJo) and publication is by Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/key-findings-from-the-digital-news-report-ireland-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>National Youth Council of Ireland Report on Young People and AI<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 4 June, the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI), in partnership with the Ombudsman for Children\u2019s Office (OCO) and Insight Research Centre for Data Analytics, DCU, launched\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youth.ie\/documents\/irish-young-people-decode-ai-verdicts-from-nycis-citizens-youth-juries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Irish Young People Decode AI: Verdicts from NYCI\u2019s Citizens\u2019 Youth Juries<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>This report presents the findings of NYCI\u2019s Citizens\u2019 Youth Juries on AI, involving 48 young people from across Ireland. TidyTowns members were urged to capture data records and upload them to a citizen science platform like OpenLitterMap.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b8DwY3W9UEA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>International Media Literacy Research Symposium 2026: Highlights \u2013 4\u20136 June<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking place 4\u20136 June in Rome, the International Media Literacy Research Symposium 2026 drew participants from around the globe and from many different sectors and professional backgrounds \u2013 yet a number of common themes emerged. The discussions throughout the symposium highlighted not only the diversity of approaches within the field but also a growing consensus around many of the challenges ahead: how to scale media literacy effectively, how to keep it human-centred in an increasingly technological environment, and how to strengthen collaboration across sectors, countries and disciplines.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/media-and-learning.eu\/subject\/lifelong-learning\/international-media-literacy-research-symposium-2025-highlights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>EU Disnfo Lab webinar: From Botnets to AI Swarms \u2013 18 June<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An EU Disinfo Lab webinar on 18 June explored how AI-enabled disinformation may evolve and scale in sophistication and coordination: from persistent AI personas and AI-supported botnets to cyborg propaganda through verified human accounts, adaptive engagement testing, and campaigns designed to manufacture the appearance of public consensus.
