Online abuse directed at journalists is a threat to freedom of expression and can undermine democracy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na, Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n has created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnam.ie\/general-public\/guides-resources\/general-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journalist Information Pack<\/a>, comprising a PowerPoint and poster in advance of the Presidential election to deliver their crucial role, both during and outside of election cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-29-165013-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5987\" style=\"width:533px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-29-165013-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-29-165013-420x236.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-29-165013-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-29-165013.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The PowerPoint includes the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Slide 7: <\/strong>What journalists should do if they experience abuse online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slides 8\u201324: <\/strong>Realistic scenarios that might affect journalists regarding online abuse, and what they can do about them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slides 25\u201333: <\/strong>How to report abusive content to various online platforms and how to report to An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slides 34\u201337: <\/strong>Supports available for journalists if they experience abuse online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n\u2019s main message to journalists is that abuse and threats are not part of their job. It\u2019s important to report abusive content online and to let line managers\/editors know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Report Guides<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"589\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/How-to-report-guides-1024x589.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5956\" style=\"width:743px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/How-to-report-guides-1024x589.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/How-to-report-guides-420x242.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/How-to-report-guides-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/How-to-report-guides.jpg 1345w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To help journalists, and the general public, understand the full journey of reporting illegal and harmful content, Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n has also released new How to Report guides. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnam.ie\/general-public\/guides-resources\/guides-how-to-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This<\/a> new page contains an overview video that explains the difference between reporting illegal and harmful content to platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a further two guides, with screenshots, that show you what to expect if you report illegal or harmful content to various platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some people may understand how to report, they may not understand what happens afterwards. These guides show you what happens next and outline your rights are if you are unhappy about the platform\u2019s decision to remove or not remove the content. These will be developed on a phased basis, with more guides and videos to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note that these guides provide examples and information to help the public understand the reporting methods on various platforms as of September 2025. They are illustrative only, do not constitute legal advice and do not represent the views or opinions of Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n, including as to whether the reporting methods comply with relevant regulatory requirements or otherwise.
