As part of this consultation process, a focus group took place in Belfast on 8 May. Three representatives from Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n attended in order to learn more and to share insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Ofcom-report-screenshot-1-.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5811\" style=\"width:618px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A safer life online for women and girls: Practical guidance for tech companies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a safety by design approach, this 60-page report outlines practical steps or actions that platforms can take in order to make life online safer for women and girls. They ask platforms to consider <strong>nine actions<\/strong>. Within each action, there are mandatory steps platforms need to take to comply with the Online Safety Act \u2013 the UK equivalent of the Irish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnam.ie\/industry-and-professionals\/online-safety-framework\/online-safety-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Online Safety Code<\/a>. This guidance takes one step further and, under each action, suggests additional \u2018best practice\u2019 steps platforms can choose to undertake voluntarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guidance divides the nine actions into three stages to ensure platforms take responsibility for keeping women and child safe online. For example, it suggests platforms appoint a point of contact to look after gender-based harms. It also looks at preventing harm; an example could be creating stronger settings by default which allow users to disable comments and be reminded of privacy settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Ofcom-report-screenshot-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5813\" style=\"width:610px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The final three actions look at empowerment and ask platforms to give women and girls more control over what they see.
