{"id":438,"date":"2021-11-17T10:44:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T10:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/?p=438"},"modified":"2022-11-25T17:50:28","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T17:50:28","slug":"playful-by-design-free-play-in-a-digital-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/ga\/playful-by-design-free-play-in-a-digital-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Playful by Design: Free play in a digital world"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Commissioned by the Digital Futures Commission (DFC), the Playful by Design report aims to improve understanding of what children value and enjoy about free play and to make evidence-based recommendations to the designers of digital products and services to improve children\u2019s opportunities for free play and overcome the inhibiting factors that children report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"577\" height=\"826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/play-report.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/play-report.png 577w, https:\/\/www.medialiteracyireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/play-report-189x270.png 189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 577px) 100vw, 577px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key findings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top demands from children aged 10\u201317 are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>62% want more features that are easy to use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>58% want more creative opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>58% want more age-appropriate features.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>56% want more affordable products and services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>45% want more products and services without advertising.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>44% want better control over who can contact them in the game or app.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>42% want more products and services that are kind, enable intergenerational play, and where people feel included.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>42% want products and services that do not share their data with other apps or businesses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the findings for eight popular digital products and services, experts call for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>more effective filter and moderation mechanisms to detect hate speech and harmful contents and to prevent these reaching children<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>specific safety-enhancing features for users rather than overarching mechanisms that restrict children\u2019s beneficial play<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>adaptable settings so that users can choose notifications or alerts relevant to them, and set and adjust limits on their own digital engagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nudges that encourage creative and stimulating experiences rather than compulsive practices that keep players returning to the game and spending money on it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To claim the label \u2018Playful by Design\u2019, digital products and services should adopt seven key recommendations.
